Wow! Talk about a movie! From beginning to end: the acting, the effects, the writing! Everything about this movie is utterly amazing. I just can't say enough about it. .... Okay, I'm joking. What a piece of crap! You know it's a bad thing when you have to watch a 30 minute Fox "Making of" special just to figure out what's going on in the movie. There was a guy sitting in my row who 'got it': got chills in all the right places and laughed at all the flat jokes. But the rest of us, well, we were less than impressed. I always eavesdrop on people as they exit the theater. Hearing words like 'stupid', 'retarded' and 'lame' usually mean that people didn't like it. Well what's not to like? Billionaire Charles Bishop Weyland (Lance Henriksen) spots what appears to be an Aztec/Cambodian/Egyptian pyramid nestled several thousand feet beneath the Antarctic basin. So he compiles a team of experts led by Antarctic guide Lex Woods, (Sanaa Lathan) to go and investigate the discovery. Long story short, they stumble across both Aliens and Predators as they navigate the maze that is the pyramid. Apparently every 100 years the Aliens hatch and the Predators kill them in an exercise to improve their hunting skills. Eventually, Woods and what's left of her team has to choose a side in the Alien and Predator war. What made Sanaa Lathan take this part, I'll never know. It couldn't have been the script. The attempts at humor fell flat. The attempts it made to set up the plot were muddled and weak. It couldn't have been the cast. Besides Henriksen, the cast was made up of virtual unknowns who had the misfortune of playing characters that were basically irreverent. I doubt it was the director. Peter W.S. Anderson has the snooze fest known as Event Horizon and a hot mess called Resident Evil to his credits. She did the best she could but no performance, however valiant, could have saved this movie. I hope she was at least paid well for this. I have a serious pet peeve with really dark settings. I know that they are useful in evoking a mood but when it interferes with being able to see the action, it is a problem. There are quite a few fight scenes between the Aliens and the Predators but half the time you couldn't tell which one was which. Not that you really care anyway. Save
your time. Save your money. It's not quite two hours long but it's almost
an hour and a half of your life that you'll definitely want back. I
know I do. |
