Ben Stiller and Jennifer Aniston are the stars of Along Came Polly but it's the supporting cast that really makes this movie fun. Ben Stiller is Reuben Feffer, who analyzes risks for an insurance company. His entire life is dedicated to avoiding risk and making safe choices. He thinks that marrying Lisa (Debra Messing), the woman of his dreams, is a safe bet; but that all falls apart when he catches her with the self-proclaimed "Scuba King," Claude, played by Hank Azaria. Reuben decides to start taking some chances and pursues a former middle school classmate, Polly (Aniston). Feffer must overcome several serious bouts with irritable bowel syndrome, two left feet and several nasty assortments of mixed nuts to win the heart of his commitment-phobic love. Aniston and Stiller are good in their roles and there are some funny situations (especially if you find farting and other bodily functions amusing). But the performances that make Polly truly entertaining are found in the supporting cast. Alec Baldwin should consider doing more comedy. He's very funny as Reuben's boss, Stan Indursky. Philip Seymour-Hoffman plays Reuben's best friend and former child-actor, Sandy Lyle. Hoffman has a reputation as a scene-stealer and doesn't disappoint here. His humor is effortless. Azaria and Bryan Brown as the adventure-seeking CEO who needs to be insured also have great small roles in this film. It
seems as if just about everyone around Stiller and Aniston was funny
(expect for Debra Messing). I wish some of that funniness had rubbed
off on the stars of the film who appeared to be doing nothing more than
going through the motions. Yet, it wasn’t entirely their fault.
It seems as if writer John Hamburg went out of his way to make the supporting
characters more interesting than the leads. There are enough funny moments
in Along Came Polly for me to recommend it. So I will recommend it.
But it's a recommendation that is squeaking by. Don't see it because
of Stiller or Aniston. See it because of just about everybody else. |
