| At the end of Big Momma's House - when we last left FBI agent Malcolm Turner - he's caught the bad guy (Terrence Howard) and got the girl (Nia Long). All was well that ended well as the credits rolled. No lingering questions remained. No obvious sign of another story beginning - i.e. no need for a sequel. But six years later, here it is anyway: Big Momma's House 2. Several years after the first film, Malcolm and Sherrie have married and are expecting their first child. Because the work of a field agent is often dangerous, Malcolm has settled for a desk job in the Bureau's public relations department. Yet part of him is itching to get back out in the field. He takes his chance when his former partner (not the one played by Paul Giamatti in the original) is shot over something involving computer hackers and a guy who likes to surf. The prime suspect in the murder is Tom Fuller (Mark Moses). The Fullers happen to be looking for a nanny for their three children (a teen, a tween and a toddler) and the FBI plans to use that position to get an undercover agent into the house. Even though he's no longer in the field, and therefore not on the case, Malcolm dusts off his Big Momma costume and goes to work. This is the part when Big Momma's House meets Mrs. Doubtfire because not only does Malcolm have to crack the case; but he's also got to teach the Fullers a thing or two about family values in the process. Let's be honest, no one is going to see Big Momma's House 2 for character development or plot twists. They are going because they want to see a funny movie. The problem is that all of the funniest moments can be seen for free in the trailer. Yes, Big Momma is funny in the yellow bathing suit and cornrows on the beach (a nod to the Bo Derek movie 10). And sure, Big Momma at the spa in a towel gets a laugh, but those momets are already in the trailer. The movie is so busy trying to set up gags for Big Momma (which more often than not fall flat) that they don't even bother to set up the plot or really establish what they are accusing Tom Fuller of doing in the first place. Even at 98 minutes, Big Momma's House 2 drags. Big Momma might be a big woman with a big heart but unfortunately she wasn't big enough to carry this movie. |
