It's breakin' my heart to write this but Breakin' All the Rules isn't a very romantic or is it very comedic, which isn't good news for a romantic comedy. Jamie Foxx is the romantic lead. He plays Quincy Watson, a magazine editor who gets dumped by his fiancée (Bianca Lawson). He turns tragedy into triumph however, when he pours his anguish into a manuscript about how to break up. The book becomes a best seller which inevitably complicates Quincy's life. His cousin Evan (Morris Chestnut) uses the books' technique to break up with his girlfriend Nicky (Gabrielle Union) and his boss Phillip (Peter MacNichol) enlists Quincy to help him break up with his gold digging girlfriend Rita (Jennifer Esposito). Complications, mistaken identities and mix-ups are supposed to keep the plot moving along. Romantic comedies are not known for their plot twists. You pretty much know who will end up with whom by the end of the movie. What makes romantic comedies work is not the destination but the journey. With Breakin' All The Rules it seems like the journey never really even gets started. It's like the audience is sitting in the car waiting for something to happen and it doesn't. Jamie Foxx, who is a great comedian and a pretty good actor, just didn't work for me as the lead. I'll be honest, I had a hard time getting past the hair. Talk about bad hair happening to good actors! Morris Chestnut and Gabrielle Union were good but they should be as they have both played these roles many times before. Peter MacNichol reprises the quirky role he made famous in Ally McBeal. I really don't know what else to say about this one. I guess, basically, I was just bored. |
