Keanu Reeves is at it again. You would think that after, not one, not two, but three Matrix movies, he'd be tired of saving the world. I guess not. As the hero of Constantine, this time he's saving the world from demons and a real hell on earth. This is going to be hard, but let me try to reprise the plot for you. Professional exorcist John Constantine (Keanu Reeves) is doomed to hell. He committed suicide but was revived; now he's sentenced to send half-breeds (part demons/part humans) to hell. Although he knows that God (and Satan) are real - he doesn't believe. Meanwhile, Detective Angela Dodson (Rachel Weisz) is having trouble believing that her twin sister Isabel, a devout Catholic, committed suicide. She asks Constantine to help her find the truth. The movie grabs you at the beginning but gradually loosens its grip. The initial scenes of the possessed Mexican, Constantine's first exorcism and Isabel's suicide get you involved and looking forward to what will happen next. So, the set-up is good. But Constantine quickly gets muddled in its confusing theology and nonsensical plot. If I had just looked at the movie without the sound, it would have been a lot better. I enjoyed it visually and the special effects were good. It was the plot that got me. I found myself asking a lot of questions that I shouldn't have had to ask. They should have been answered within the script. Having said that, Constantine is based on the Hellblazer comic and maybe it would have been easier to follow had I been a fan of the comic. However, reading the comic shouldn't be a prerequisite for understanding the movie. Keanu did a passable job but keep in mind, the job in question didn't involve him having to act or to show any emotion at all. I loved Keanu in his supporting role in Something's Gotta Give. He wasn't saving the world and he didn't get the girl but he was charming and intelligent and not required to wear a black trench coat. That's the Keanu I want to see more often. Keanu and Rachel Weisz did the best with what they were given but they weren't given much. The same can be said for the supporting cast: Dijmon Hounsou and Shia LeBouf just didn't have much to do. Tilda Swinson as Gabriel and Gavin Rossdale (frontman for the band Bush) were the only ones who really seemed to have a little fun with the roles they were given. I guess for me: Keanu Reeves + Good Effects + Some Action - Plot - Coherent Script = Rental. If you do see Constantine stay until the end. There is a final scene that airs after the credits. |
