Good Luck Chuck

Rating: R

Running Time: 96 minutes

By Thomas Ferguson

Some people carry a rabbit’s foot around with them for good luck. Some pray to a higher power. For the desperate women in the new comedy Good Luck Chuck, all they need is a quick roll in the hay with the title character and the next man they date will turn into the love of their life.

Comedian/actor Dane Cook stars as Charlie Logan, a ladies man with a curse. A curse given to him by a girl he blew off in middle school. He grows up to be a successful dentist, but his love life is less than successful. He has serious commitment issues that only backfire in his face when he realizes that once he is dumped by a girl, she goes on to find her true love. Once this little secret gets around, every jilted woman in the city goes out of their way to have sex with him. Of course he loves all the attention at first, but when he meets the love of his life, things change drastically.

Jessica Alba plays Cam Wexler, a beautiful, yet clumsy penguin enthusiast who doesn’t believe this curse is real. She reluctantly dates him, but when things start to heat up, Chuck flips out and does everything to keep her near. His obsessive behavior only freaks Cam out and drives her away. He must figure out how to beat the curse or he will lose the girl of his dream forever.

I have mixed feelings about this movie. On the positive side, a hell of a concept. It was one of those commercial ideas that made me think… Why in the hell didn’t I come up with that? That being said, the jokes were mediocre at best. A few laugh out loud moments, but not enough to carry a ninety minute movie.

The movie wasn’t bad , just not all that funny. I did like the story and I think Cook really can carry a movie, but I was expecting another Knocked Up or Superbad. Unfortunately, this movie came nowhere close to either of these comedy hits. The movie was extremely predictable, but something about these characters and the actors playing them was appealing…Well, almost appealing. Balls of Fury’s Dan Fogler co stared. He played Chuck’s best friend Stu and can we say the word “pig“. This disgustingly, unfunny character became an annoyance quickly. Fortunately, there was a sex montage that made up for him though…funniest montage in years.
