Forget action, Will Smith is a natural for romantic comedy. With his magnetic personality and charm, I'm amazed it took him this long to do one. Maybe he was waiting for the right script. Whatever the case, Will Smith could be the jolt of caffeine the lethargic romantic comedy genre desperately needs. Will Smith is Alex Hitchens, a covert Date Doctor who helps men land the women of their dreams. (Kevin James) is Hitch's latest client, a dumpy accountant with the hots for a celebrity heiress and client, Amber Cole (Amber Valletta). Eva Mendes plays Sara Melas, a cynical workaholic gossip columnist. While Alex is successful in match making for everyone else, his attempts to woo Sara are disastrous at best. The plot is never the reason to see a romantic comedy; you almost always know exactly how it's doing to end. You also know that there will be a 'meet cute' where the couple meets, for the first time, in some quirky cutesy way. And of course, there will be lots of miscommunications and misread signals. So, why do we see romantic comedies? Chemistry. The success or failure of a romantic comedy rests on the chemistry between the two leads. Smith and Mendes definitely have it. Their 'meet cute' is very cleverly written and well executed. You immediately see why he's the Date Doctor and why she'd be interested. Yet, Hitch is a romantic comedy. And, Smith and Kevin James have some of the films funniest scenes. Additionally, there is a good deal of physical comedy. I think romantic comedies from the guys point-of-view; tend to emphasize the comedy in romantic comedy. My main criticism is (at almost two hours) Hitch is just a little too long. After all the relationships were established, it took quite a while to get to the complication. Things were going along a little too well and for a little too long. I kept wondering, "So, when are things going to start going wrong." Hitch is a great date movie for the guys and the girls - its romantic without ever getting too sappy. The ladies have Will to look at and the guys have Eva. |
