Something's Gotta Give

Rating: PG-13

Running Time: 123 minutes

Michael Douglas and Gywneth Paltrow (and in real life Catherine Zeta-Jones); Harrison Ford and Anne Heche (and in real life, Calista Flockhart),; Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta-Jones; in real-life and in reel-life, it seems that in Hollywood, old men only date younger women. Much younger women. So, it was refreshing to see a movie romance blossom between two people who are both eligible for an AARP card (you have to be 55 to get one of those).

Diane Keaton plays esteemed playwright Erica Barry. She is divorced, single and lives vicariously through her work. When her daughter Marin (played by Amanda Peet) brings her latest boyfriend, record label owner (Jack Nicholson), out to her mom's Hamptons house for the weekend, it sets off a chain of events that leads to an interesting love triangle and ultimately an unexpected romance.

Nicholson and Keaton have a chemistry that is enjoyable to watch -- even if the movie does go on for about 20 minutes too long. In all of the Matrix madness, I forgot how adorable and charismatic Keanu Reeves could be. As the doctor who gives old Jack a run for his money, Keanu was a refreshing surprise.

Critics have complained that Diane Keaton, at times, acted 'too adolescent' to be a mature woman in love. Well, as I get older, I realize that 'mature' people don't always act and react in 'mature' ways. I felt that she created a substantial, multidimensional woman. I respect the fact that she didn't rely on what audiences assumed a mature and multidimensional woman should be.

One would hope that the success of this movie would lead producers and executives to believe that there is an audience interested in seeing movies about people over 30. Of course, I thought that after the success of the First Wives Club, too.
